In this article we will discuss about Pope Francis. Pope Francis the spiritual leader of the Catholic church is renowned for his humility compassion and Progressive views. His emphasis on social justice environmental stewardship and dialogue among religions has brought a modern approach to the papacy. As per the Time magazine’s Person of the Year for 2013, Pope Francis has been called the hope and change of the Vatican. Although each person is unique, Pope Francis stands out from the majority of his predecessors.

Jorge Bergoglio was born on December 17, 1936 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He earned a master’s degree in chemistry and philosophy and later a doctorate in theology after training in a Jesuit seminary. His father Mario was an accountant employed by the railways and his mother Regina was a committed wife dedicated to raising their five children. During his childhood he became fluent in both Italian and Spanish. From an early age bolo’s parents imparted good values to their children such as discipline.
In the year 1969, Bergoglio became an ordained Catholic priest. Francis is the first Jesuit pope, and from the very beginning, he has worn simpler attire—a modest cassock without elaborate sleeves and red shoes, which is typical of the Jesuit order. In 1998, Bergoglio was named Archbishop of Buenos Aires, where he became well known for traveling to the city’s slums and working firsthand with the poor.
As Archbishop, he often took public transportation and criticized members of the clergy who led extravagant lifestyles. This humility continued into his papacy. On March 13, 2013, at the age of 76, Bergoglio was named the 266th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church, becoming the first non-European and the first Jesuit priest to hold the position. He also became the first pope to take the name Francis, in honor of St. Francis of Assisi. A fellow cardinal in the conclave reportedly whispered to him, “Don’t forget the poor,” which inspired him to choose the name—a choice that has since embodied his entire leadership style. He has chosen not to live in the papal palace, drives an old car, and continues to wear simple clothing, including his same old shoes.
Upon becoming pope, Francis abolished the traditional bonuses paid to Vatican employees upon the election of a new pope. He also appointed a group of eight cardinals as advisers to initiate reforms in the Roman Catholic Church. Many view Pope Francis as a breath of fresh air in the governance of the Church, answering the prayers of those who felt it had become too inward-focused. His favorite expression is that the Church should not be self-referential; rather, it should take the Gospel out into the world, which is in great need of it today.
