The 17th edition of the Indian Premier League will start with a strong clash between defending champions Chennai Super Kings(CSK) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru(RCB) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on this Friday, 22nd March 2024. Just like last year, 10 franchise teams will take part in this time IPL 2024.
No doubt Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians are the most successful and consistent teams in IPL history with both winning five titles each. Also Kolkata Knight Riders wins the title twice and Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals, Gujarat Titans have won the title once each.
Recently Delhi Capitals rechristened Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings have been in the IPL since the inaugural season in 2008 while Lucknow Super Giants are the latest entrants in the league along with Titans, having made their debut two seasons back.
In this season the 10 IPL teams will be divided into two groups of five each. Every team will play two matches against other group all five teams and once against all four teams in the same group. All teams play seven away and home games in the group stage which is held in a round-robin format.
After completing the group stage, the top four teams will reach to the playoffs on the basis of aggregate points progress. Top two teams will play the first Qualifier where the winning team progresses directly to the final.
Those team finish the group stage in third and fourth, they can take part in the Eliminator and the winning team of that fixture faces the loser of the first Qualifier for a spot in the final.
This year the IPL 2024 final is expected to be held in late May. However, the full schedule of this tournament is yet to come out.
MS Dhoni was the captain of CSK to their fifth IPL title last season. however, he won’t be leading the Yellow Brigade this time around. Ruturaj Gaikwad will be the captain the of this five-time champions team.
Hardik Pandya, the star all-rounder who had captained Titans to consecutive finals, including winning the competition in 2022. This time Mumbai Indians has returned him, where he will be taking over the captaincy from Rohit Sharma.
Both Dhoni and Rohit have five times IPL trophies under their belt as captains. Gujarat Titans have decided to appoint Shubman Gill as Hardik’s successor.
